Sumner is a great place to live, work, shop and play

A fast-growing powerhouse of entertainment, jobs and affordable housing, Sumner County is home to the well-established major communities of Gallatin, Hendersonville and Goodlettsville, each of which offer residents a quality lifestyle with a variety of ways to spend leisure time. Along with smaller communities like Portland and White House, the county offers a variety of lifestyle experiences.

HENDERSONVILLE

Hendersonville was settled around 1784 by Tennessee surveyor and state Sen. Daniel Smith. Smith’s historic home, Rock Castle, is now a state landmark. In 1790, William Henderson, for whom the area was named, settled in and became the city’s first postmaster. With the completion of the Old Hickory Dam in 1954, the city of Hendersonville began to grow into the most populous city in Sumner County. Now the largest city in the county, Hendersonville was incorporated in 1969.

Situated on scenic Old Hickory Lake, the city’s residents regularly melt the stress away by fishing, boating and playing on the 26 miles of shoreline along the lake. Other popular hot spots include the Bluegrass Yacht & Country Club, Hendersonville Skate Park, Johnny Cash Museum and Drakes Creek Activity Center. Though it is best known as the home of the late country stars Johnny Cash and Conway Twitty, Hendersonville has been put back on the map recently by teen country star Taylor Swift. She calls the city home, along with other music luminaries such as Marty Stuart and Ricky Skaggs.

GALLATIN

A thriving community 25 miles northeast of Nashville, Gallatin serves as the county seat and offers big-city opportunities as well as small-town charm. The city’s town square is its cornerstone; it features a courthouse and 19th-century buildings.

Gallatin is home to a diverse business community, including manufacturing, retail, agriculture, a regional hospital and Volunteer State Community College. Activities include a variety of historic, educational and recreational opportunities; popular outdoor attractions include Old Hickory Lake and Bledsoe Creek State Park. If it’s retail therapy that you crave, you can satisfy it at Streets of Indian Lake shopping center. In addition to shopping, the enclave offers great dining opportunities plus a movie theater and summer entertainment series.

GOODLETTSVILLE

Straddling Davidson and Sumner counties, Goodlettsville was incorporated as a city in 1958. The city chose to remain autonomous in 1963 when the city of Nashville merged with the government of Davidson County. As a result, Goodlettsville operates a separate governmental entity. It has a mayor, vice-mayor and a city commission.

Known for its antique district and beautiful farmland, Goodlettsville is situated adjacent to Hendersonville. It boasts attractions like RiverGate Mall, Long Hollow Winery, Twelve Stones Crossing Golf Club, Peay Park and Fenway’s Dog Park. Goodlettsville is also the home of Dollar General Corp.'s corporate headquarters.
